Out Of The Dark

Out of the Dark recycles, repurposes and revamps salvaged furniture as a means to train, educate and employ young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

I'm a volunteer for Out of the Dark and this blog is about the project and our artistic inspiration.

  1. Workshop Update

Have a look at some fab works-in-progress straight from the Out of the Dark workshop:

Here’s a gorgeous sunny stand that has just been repainted.

This table was originally designed and built in Buckinghamshire by local company Ercol. Bought by a Bucks resident and recycled by a Bucks non-profit… this table has hada long local journey.

What is permaculture? The Permaculture Research Institute defines it as:

Permaculture (the word, coined by Bill Mollison, is a portmanteau of permanent agriculture and permanent culture) is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people — providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way. Without permanent agriculture there is no possibility of a stable social order.

So, permaculture is about trying to live with nature instead of against it. It can include recycling, energy conservation and eco-friendly farming.

The photos above are of a permaculture farm in Austria. The farm’s owner is one of the leading figures in the permaculture community.
